In order to unfold the varieties and diversities of NE States systematically and to make use of the influences for the purpose of development in general and sustainable management in particular application of Geomatics is a specific need contextually relevant to the region. In the light of such need, NIRD-NERC established a GIS Facility Centre in August, 2005. The Centre has been upgraded and renamed as Centre for Geoinformatics Application for Rural Development (CGARD) from September, 2009. The CGARD, NIRDPR, Guwahati functions with the objective to assist implementing agencies with GIS support for planning and management of ongoing rural development programmes with special focus on MGNREGS, IWMP, PMGSY, IAY, RDWSP etc. Resource mapping, asset mapping etc are other focus of the centre. With increased importance laid off late on Panchayati Raj Institution by the MoPR, GoI, the CGARD, NIRDPR, Guwahati seeks to render its services by way of developing geotagging and mapping skill among the functionaries of PRIs and also to assist the panchayat with the generation and uploading of geo-tagged information.
